A name synonymous with racing history is set to return to the world stage of endurance motorsport. McLaren Racing has officially announced its entry into the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) starting in 2027.
Three decades after its iconic Le Mans triumph in 1995, McLaren is ready to chase endurance glory once again. With a legacy that includes the legendary “Triple Crown” of motorsport — victories at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans — McLaren’s return to endurance racing is more than just a comeback; it’s a statement.
“We’re Back,” declared Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, as the brand unveiled its bold new chapter in Woking today.
The move marks a historic return to endurance competition for McLaren, which famously won the Le Mans 24 Hours on its first attempt in 1995 with the iconic F1 GTR. In 2027, the team will target the pinnacle of sportscar racing in the Hypercar category — a battleground now featuring some of the world’s biggest automotive and motorsport giants.
A Legacy Reignited
Founded in 1963 by New Zealand driver Bruce McLaren, the team made its Formula 1 debut in 1966 and quickly grew into one of the most decorated names in motorsport. Over the decades, McLaren has amassed 21 Formula 1 world championships, 191 F1 victories, and iconic wins at both the Indy 500 and Le Mans.
While the team has primarily been focused on single-seater and electric racing in recent years — competing in F1 with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, INDYCAR with Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, Nolan Siegel, and Christian Lundgaard, and Formula E under the NEOM McLaren banner — the return to WEC adds a powerful new dimension to McLaren’s competitive footprint.
The WEC Hypercar category has rapidly become one of the most prestigious stages in global motorsport, attracting manufacturers like Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche, and Cadillac. With McLaren’s entry, the championship gains yet another iconic name — and fans gain a thrilling new chapter to follow.
Beyond Racing
McLaren’s return to endurance isn’t just about chasing titles. The brand has positioned itself as a leader in sustainability, diversity, and innovation. As a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Commitment, McLaren Racing is committed to achieving net zero by 2040 while promoting inclusivity and progress throughout motorsport.
With world-class engineering, a legacy of performance, and a hunger to win, McLaren’s upcoming Hypercar program is poised to make headlines — and history — once again.
Le Mans 2027? McLaren will be there. And they’re coming to win.
