The collaboration between Repsol and Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) is taking on a new dimension, in which both companies will work together to develop renewable fuel and renewable lubricant for high-level competition. This agreement began in 2024 with the Dakar Rally and in 2025 will cover the entire 2025 World Rally Raids Championship, which includes five world events, including the 2025 Dakar. This annual event, which will take place from January 3rd-17th in Saudi Arabia, will once again feature Repsol thanks to its technological alliance with the Japanese manufacturer, one of the main favourites for victory.

Both companies share a long-term joint vision when it comes to finding technological and innovative solutions that contribute to the decarbonisation of high-level competition. Thanks to this common objective and the fact that Repsol has a key partner in one of the most demanding competitions on the planet, the Spanish multi-energy company will be present on the cars of the Brazilian Lucas Moraes –co-driven by Armand Monleón– and the American Seth Quintero –accompanied by Dennis Zenz–.

High-level racing has always been the best stage for Repsol as a testing ground for technological development projects. For the company, certifying and improving the performance of its products in the most extreme competitions in the world is the natural way to bring renewable fuels to the streets that are already a solution for the mobility of the future. Repsol began using renewable fuels with Toyota in competition since 2021 with the Repsol Toyota Rally Team and Isidre Esteve.

Long-term technology agreement

This new agreement between Toyota Gazoo Racing and Repsol will allow the engineers and scientists at the Repsol Technology Lab to have an engine from the Japanese manufacturer. This is a demonstration of the shared will that Repsol and Toyota have to evolve towards new products that are even more efficient and with the same performance such as renewable fuel and renewable lubricant. In 2025, the fuel used by Toyota Gazoo Racing cars will contain 70% renewable materials, and the intention is to continue this evolution and reach 100% renewable content, developing a quality fuel, the properties of which, in addition to offering optimal performance, guarantee the correct care of the cars’ engines.

Repsol’s relationship with the Dakar goes back several decades, during which no less than seven victories have been achieved in the car and motorcycle categories, with drivers such as Nani Roma, Marc Coma, Stéphane Peterhansel and Luc Alphand. There is a connection between Repsol and Toyota from the early 1990s, when Repsol were proclaimed World Rally Champions twice with Carlos Sainz and the legendary Toyota Celica.

Repsol is the only company in Spain and Portugal that has a plant completely dedicated to the production of renewable fuels on an industrial scale, located in Cartagena. The new plant has the capacity to manufacture 250,000 tons of renewable fuels per year from waste such as used cooking oil. These renewable fuels can be used in aeroplanes, ships, buses, trucks, motorcycles or cars. Renewable fuels are one of the main levers of Repsol’s strategy to accelerate the decarbonisation of transport and achieve being a net zero emissions company by 2050. Today, Repsol has 600 service stations that already supply 100% renewable Nexa Diesel throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
